McLaren Vale is one of the most famous winery regions in Australia. Situated only 35km from Adelaide, a visit to the region is a must when in the City of Churches. Famous for producing sophisticated red wines, McLaren Vale is home to some of the oldest vines in the country.
Every winery has their own story, and Wirra Wirra’s tale is a fascinating one. Originally established in 1894, Wirra Wirra flourished in its early days, producing a range of wines including a much-acclaimed Shiraz, exporting the drop to England until founder Robert Strangways Wigley died in 1926.
Following Wigley’s passing, Wirra Wirra was eventually abandoned until 1969 when the late Greg Trott and cousin Roger resurrected the winery from two remnant walls and some slate fermenting tanks. Trott had a simple philosophy:
“Never give misery an even break, nor bad wine a second sip. You must be serious about quality, dedicated to your task in life, especially winemaking, but this should all be fun.”
This quote is inscribed on a large slate installation that all Wirra Wirra staff and guests pass by as they enter the winery. This philosophy continues to influence the culture of this successful winery today.
