With the AFL and NRL finishing last week, both with epic finishes, you might be misled to believe that it is now the low season for sports and entertainment. You couldn’t be more wrong. With Spring Racing about to kick off, as well as the NBL and A-League seasons, the Summer of Cricket including the Big Bash League, Polo and more still to come in 2016, it is really only just beginning. Not to mention with the weather improving it is the perfect time for a winery or brewery tour, to play golf, to go out to a nice restaurant or to just get outside and enjoy what this great country has to offer.

As we approach the end of the year, let’s take a look at the top 10 events to attend to round out 2016.

Commonwealth Bank Boxing Day Test - 26th – 30th December

The Boxing Day Test at the MCG epitomises summer in Australia. This year we will be coming up against Pakistan, in what will be the second test of a three test series. Pakistan will be looking to inflict some revenge after Australia has defeated them in both the ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup in recent years.

Socceroos v Japan – World Cup Qualifier - 11th October

The Socceroos continue their journey on the road to Russia and the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a crucial qualifier against Japan. Held under the roof at Etihad Stadium, this is sure to be a high quality match with lots on the line for both teams.

Emirates Melbourne Cup - 1st November

The race that stops the nation. What more needs to be said. The Melbourne Cup produced one of the great sporting stories last year as Michelle Payne became the first female jockey to win the Cup on the back of Prince of Penzance paying an astonishing $101. There is not only Melbourne Cup day to look forward to, but the entire to Melbourne Cup Carnival, including AAMI Victoria Derby Day, Crown Oaks Day and Emirates Stakes Day.

Michelin Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix - 21st – 23rd October

With a record breaking eight different winners in the last 14 races, including our very own Jack Miller, the on-track action promises to be exhilarating at Philip Island this year. Why not make a weekend of it and buy a 3 day package.


Australia PGA Championship - 1st – 4th December

Australia’s Nathan Holman will be looking to make it back-to back victories after taking out the event at RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast in 2015. With Adam Scott to return to his home town for the first time since 2014, this should be on the top of any golf fans list.

Jeep Christmas Polo - 14th December

There are many different options for polo this summer. Portsea Polo, Flinders Polo, Ladies Day Polo just to name a few. Christmas Polo falls at a time that may be perfect for anyone looking to do something a bit different for their work Christmas party, or to just get out and enjoy the sun with family and friends.

Coldplay - A Head Full of Dreams Tour - 9th December

This will be a night to remember. Coldplay return to Australia to perform their seventh album which since it's release in December 2015 has reached #1 on iTunes in more than 90 countries and sold more than 3.5 million copies.

Big Bash League - 20th December – 28th January

It was too hard to pick out one game of the Big Bash League to attend, as they can all deliver thrillers! This spectacle is perfect for people of all ages, and is a true entertainment experience that everyone should see at least once. Keep a close eye on the Melbourne Stars this season as they look to achieve what has eluded them thus far - winning the Grand Final.


A-League Derby - Melbourne City v Melbourne Victory - 17th December

Just like the Big Bash League, there is going to be plenty to look forward to in the A-League this season, but in particular the Melbourne Derby. In what is sure to be a sell-out at AAMI Park, Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory will reignite their bitter rivalry, with the added drama of Tim Cahill joining Melbourne City.

NBL 2016/17 Season - 6th October – 12th February

Basketball in Australia is on the rise, especially with players like Patty Mills, Andrew Bogut, Matthew Dellavedova and 2016 number one draft pick Ben Simmons making it big in the NBA. Although we came up short at the end of the Rio Olympics, our success at the international level has not gone unnoticed, and in turn the quality of the NBL has improved significantly. Attending an NBL game is a must this season.
