Previewing The 2019 Kooyong Classic

The Kooyong Classic is firmly established as the premier lead up event for the Grand Slam of the Asia/Pacific, the Australian Open. As part of the summer of tennis in Melbourne, each year in January the world’s top players grace Kooyong’s historic centre court, maintaining a long and distinguished tradition as the ‘spiritual home of tennis.’

The Kooyong Classic is staged at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, Australia’s most prestigious and exclusive tennis club situated in one of Melbourne’s most affluent suburbs. The Club, which is ranked in the top five in the world, boasts a rich tennis history, having hosted the Australian Open Grand Slam and Davis Cup.

The Kooyong Classic was established in 1988 to maintain Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club’s position as Australia’s spiritual home of tennis, following the relocation of the Australian Open to Melbourne Park. Since that time, the world’s greatest players have graced the iconic Kooyong centre court including Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Peter Sampras, Andre Agassi and Australian’s Pat Cash and Lleyton Hewitt.

The famed tournament returns in 2019 and will boast some of the world’s best players who you can read about below.

After a grueling semi-final victory at Wimbledon against John Isner, Anderson's recent form suggests 2019 will be a career year for the South African.

Richard Gasquet (France)

A world-class player for well over a decade now, the elegant Frenchman will entertain fans with his stylish one-handed backhand. In 2018, he became the 1st Frenchman with 500 careers wins and won his 15-career title. Gasquet will look be looking to advance to his first quarterfinal at the Australian Open in 2019 on his 15th attempt and that quest will begin at the 2019 Kooyong Classic.

Marin Cilic (Croatia)

Marin Cilic will look to continue an excellent close to the 2018 season following victory in the Davis Cup. Returning to Melbourne after finals appearances at this years’ Australian Open in January, Cilic looks set to continue his success at the 2019 Australian Open.

Juan Martin Del Potro (Argentina)

Juan Martin Del Potro is a fan favourite across the world with a current ranking of No. 5. Following a setback from injury in 2018, he is sure to continue his dominance as one of the world’s elite players. The 2019 Kooyong Classic will offer fans the opportunity to see Delpo up close, in one of his first matches back from injury.

Bernard Tomic (Australia)

Bernard Tomic captured the Chengdu Open in September, moving him back inside the top 100 for the first time since August 2017. Tomic’s return to form makes for an exciting match up against the world’s best at Kooyong as he prepares to contest the 2019 Australian Open on home soil.

Henri Kontinen and John Peers have been one of the most successful double pairings on court in recent years, following a successful 2017 Australian Open victory and a career high world no.1 and no.2 ranking respectively.

Three-time Grand Slam doubles winner Jack Sock is a fan favourite around the world. Add to that his success in the Doubles and a rise inside the top 10 in 2017, Sock is sure to bring plenty of personality and baseline winners to the 2019 Kooyong Classic.

Coco Vandeweghe (USA)

CoCo Vandeweghe will look to put together a strong season in 2019 following a trying 2018 that was marred by injury. Having secured a career-high ranking of no. 9 in January of 2018, Vandeweghe rallied late in the season to find great success alongside Ashleigh Barty in the doubles competition, taking out a Grand Slam title at the US Open. Looking to rebuild her singles ranking, the Kooyong Classic will be a key stepping stone in Vandeweghe’s Australian Open preparation.

Amanda Anisimova (USA)

Arriving on the WTA circuit in 2018, Amanda Anisimova has gone from strength-to-strength following her fourth round run at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, defeating then World No. 9 Petra Kvitova. With a finals appearance at the Japan Women’s Open and a growing resume of top quality wins, 2019 is shaping up to be a breakout year for the 17-year-old US star.

Peng Shuai (China)

As the first Chinese player to achieve a World No. 1 ranking in 2014 in doubles, Peng Shuai’s two Grand Slam doubles victories are a testament to the two-hander’s success on tour. With a penchant for beating players inside the Top 10, the former US Open semi-finalist adds an enticing element to the women’s field at the 2019 Kooyong Classic.
