GWS Giants 2017 Season Preview

The Greater Western Sydney Giants are the AFL’s newest franchise and despite some lean years in the beginning of the club’s short history, they have seen some success in the past two seasons. Their stock of talent, plus an addition of experience in recent years has them sitting in a prime position to be a dominant force in the AFL for the next era.

After suffering an agonising preliminary final loss in 2016 at the hands of the Western Bulldogs – who would then go on to the be the Premiers – the Giants have added further experience with the recruitment of Brett Deledio from Richmond.

The Giants added some more young stars with their number two and number five pick in the national draft, picking up Tim Taranto and Will Setterfield respectively. They added further potential with Harry Perryman at pick 14 and Isaac Cumming at pick 20.

Looking at the Giants best 22, it is hard to see any chinks in the chain. With talent all across the board, plus another year and another pre-season under the belt of their young stars, the Giants will enter the 2017 season as the favourites to take out the flag.

Let’s take a look at some key games for the Giants.

Round 9 v Richmond – Saturday May 20 – Spotless Stadium

Deledio’s first game against his former club in which he was a number one draft pick, 2 time best and fairest winner and vice-captain. The Giants will want to ensure the new recruit that he made the right decision in leaving the club. Watch the drama unfold from the Skydeck or Chairman’s Lounge at Spotless Stadium.

Round 17 v Sydney Swans – Saturday July 15 – Spotless Stadium

The Battle of the Bridge. It will be the second time the teams meet for the year; however, it is the Giant’s game to lose at their home ground. They showed in last year’s qualifying final that they aren’t afraid of the Swans on the big stage – and they will want to reiterate that. This is sure to be another massive clash between the cross-town rivals.

Round 21 v Western Bulldogs – Friday August 11 – Etihad Stadium

The Bulldogs snatched a Grand Final berth from the Giants with a last minute goal in the 2016 preliminary final. The Giants will also face the Bulldogs twice in the 2017 season, but with this game being so late in the season and close to finals, it is all that more important. Catch the game at Etihad with a corporate suite or dining package.
