Mornington Peninsula is one of best golfing meccas in Australia, and even the world. A lot is made of the Melbourne Sandbelt and rightfully so, with world class golf courses including Royal Melbourne, Kingston Heath, Metropolitan and many more leading the way in terms of design, visual aesthetics and maintenance.
Yet only an hour south of Melbourne and the Sandbelt region, a group of courses lay in a beautiful part of the world - the Mornington Peninsula, home to The National, Moonah Links, St Andrews Beach, Sorrento and The Dunes. While these elite courses get well-deserved acknowledgments, there is one course in particular that flies under the radar - RACV Cape Schanck Resort.
Not anymore. RACV Cape Schanck Resort has the privilege of hosting the 2018 Victorian PGA Championship. A course that rivals any on the Mornington Peninsula, RACV Cape Schanck will receive the recognition and exposure it deserves in October 2018.
The tournament will tee off on Thursday 11 October, with the champion set to be crowned following 72 holes on Sunday 14 October. Once again, the tournament will include the Victorian PGA Celebrity Amateur Challenge. Introduced in 2015, this innovative and unique experience allows any amateur golfer to team up alongside the pros for the first two days of play. The top 25 teams will then qualify for Saturday before being cut down to the final 8 on Sunday. It truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity for any golfing tragic.
After a relatively manageable front nine the course comes to life with an undulating back nine that presents glorious views of the coast. Requiring precision hitting both off the tee and into the greens, what makes this course so good is the playability for amateurs whilst still presenting a tough test for the professionals.
