The summer of cricket is upon us. Goal posts have been taken down, wickets are being prepared and the sun is starting to shine brightly. It’s the time of year where we start writing down our best XI’s, claiming ourselves as armchair experts on the state of Australian cricket and preparing for a backyard cricket season of our own. With India, South Africa & Sri Lanka all touring Australia, the 2018/19 summer is shaping up to be a blockbuster.
The Australian cricket team kick off their summer on home soil with a three-match One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa, starting on November 4 at the newly built Perth Stadium, before matches at Adelaide Oval (Nov 9), and Hobart (Nov 11) and a Twenty20 at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast (Nov 17). The series will mark the first time these two rivals have met since the March/April fiery four-Test series, where we all know what happened and why Australia’s two best batsmen won’t be taking part in any of the action this time around.
Australia will remain in the coloured clothing for the remainder of November, taking on India in three Twenty20s in Brisbane (Nov 21), Melbourne (Nov 23) & Sydney (Nov 25).
Once December hits it’s time for Test cricket, with Australia and India set to battle it out for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the four-test series. Beginning in Adelaide on December 6, the two teams will then travel west to play in Perth Stadium’s maiden Test match on December 14, before the traditional Boxing Day and New Years Tests (Jan 3). India will remain in Australia for three ODIs hosted in Sydney (Jan 12), Adelaide (Jan 15) and Melbourne (Jan 18).
The international summer of cricket wraps up with a two-Test series against Sri Lanka at the Gabba (Jan 24) and an historic first test match at Canberra’s Manuka Oval commencing February 1. While India declined the opportunity play a day/night test, Sri Lanka have agreed to take part in the popular time slot at the GABBA in Brisbane.
Anticipation is building already around who will be selected for that first test with a number of spots open, particular for batsmen who perform well in the early rounds of the Sheffield Shield. Given Steve Smith and David Warner, our two best batsmen, are missing for the summer, the onus will fall on the top 6 to contribute evenly and not succumb to our now famous battling collapses that seem to be occurring a little too often for an Aussie fan’s liking.
