CARLTON RESPECTS - A Prevention of Family Violence

Carlton Football Club in 2016 was proud to launch CARLTON RESPECTS, a new family violence prevention initiative promoting respect and equality in our community. Carlton has developed the education program, with advice from leading organisation, Our Watch. CARLTON RESPECTS seeks to educate students about respect and equality and the program is in response to the disturbing statistics around family violence in our community. Research from Our Watch, shows schools and sports are a great platform to lead change in this area.

CARLTON RESPECTS is aimed at changing attitudes, behaviour and/or environments to prevent violence before it occurs. Our Watch Chief Executive Officer, Mary Barry has said, “Education is key to preventing violence against women.”

Carlton, a leader in the space in the sporting world, is focused and determined to deliver a program that addresses underlying issues and risk factors to prevent gender-based violence and disrespect against women. The program challenges gender stereotypes and roles and aims to strengthen positive and respectful relations between young women and young men.

CARLTON RESPECTS is a facilitated simulated learning environment, which enables students to explore and experience the limitations of stereotyping, and to build the knowledge and skills required to establish and sustain equal, respectful, non-violent gender relationships. Currently, CARLTON RESPECTS Community Education Program is delivered to year seven and eight students in Melbourne’s Northern Corridor.

Now in its third year, Carlton will buck tradition and pull on orange socks for the Club’s annual CARLTON RESPECTS game against Melbourne in Round 9 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Carlton urge everyone to sport their own touch of orange and join them in its endeavour to promote gender equality for the prevention of violence against women.
